Protecting Against UV Light

We are about to start another central Illinois winter in Peoria, Illinois. Central Illinois winters are notorious for being very cold and very snowy. However, meteorologists are predicting a mild winter due to El Niño. Although it might be more temperate than usual, we want to remind our patients that UV rays are not related to temperature. If the sun is out or if there is a thin layer of clouds, you are at risk of UV exposure. Snow on the ground can reflect UV rays and increase the likelihood of exposure to UV rays. When purchasing sunglasses, look for the following:

1. Check that the sunglasses block UV-A and UV-B rays.

2. Find sunglasses that have mirror coating. Sunglasses with this type of coating will help reduce any temperature build up that may occur.

If you have any particular concerns, reach out to the optometrists at the Bixby Eye Center in Peoria, Illinois. They will be more than happy to help make recommendations to you about sunglasses that will fit your needs.
