Buyer Beware – Decorative Contacts for Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner, and it is time to dress up as your favorite scary character. Some of these costumes may call for altering the way your eye looks. You may be tempted to buy decorative contact lenses to perfect that look. But beware and know the consequences. Improper use of contact lenses can cause eye infections and lead to blindness! Be smart and follow these steps:

  1. Consult an ophthalmologist before considering putting anything in your eye even if you have perfect vision.

  2. “One-size-fits-all” does not exist in contact lenses. Eyeballs can be different sizes and shaped differently. Improperly fitted contact lenses can damage your eyes.

  3. If you want buy decorative lenses, only buy them from an eye care professional or a seller who asks for a prescription.

  4. Many decorative contacts are not approved for sale in the United States. It is best to check with your eye doctor to see what you can safely use.
