What happens when you leave your contacts in too long?

Want to loose your eye sight? Keep your contacts in for a very long time! There was a lady that left her contacts in for more than 6 months. This caused a single-cell amoeba called an acanthamoeba, to eat away at her retina. The video above provides an excellent overview on what caused this to happen. Don't want to loose your eye sight? Make sure you follow these tips:

1.) Do not sleep in your contacts - doing so can cause eye irritation.

2.)  Replace your contacts regularly - follow the manufacturer's guidelines on when contacts should be replaces. By not replacing your contacts regularly, you could be breeding bacteria on your lenses.

3.) Wash your hands before handling your contacts - again, you want to make sure you are not transfering and bacteria to your contacts.

4.) Don't only use multi-purpose solution to clean your contacts - multi-purpose solution doesn't contain the same amount of "cleaning" power as a stand alone cleaner. Make sure to use the stand alone cleaner to make your contacts as clean as possible.
